Looker Studio for SEO Reports: The Free Route, Done Properly

Filed Sep 16, 2026Figures checked Sep 24, 2026

Looker Studio is the most capable free thing in agency reporting, and it is free in the plain sense of the word: Google's overview page describes it as free and the button on that page reads "use it for free". It pays this site nothing. It is still the first thing a small agency should try.

This post is about what it is good at, where it runs out, and the one thing about its paid tier that is worth knowing before you plan around it.

What it does that a paid platform also does

Connects to Search Console and Analytics natively, so the two sources that carry most of a client SEO report need no third-party connector and no extra fee. Builds a dated, filtered, multi-page document. Compares a period against the previous one, which is the single chart most clients actually read. Shares by link, so a client does not need an account to open it. Styles to whatever colours and fonts you want, including your own logo.

That last point matters more than agencies expect. A well-built Looker Studio report with your branding is not obviously a free tool's output. What it is obviously is a Google address in the link bar.

Where it stops

Four places, and they are the same four the whole free stack runs into.

It does not send. There is scheduled email delivery in Looker Studio, and it is useful, but it goes out from Google rather than from you, and the report the client receives is an attachment rather than a branded portal. If the arrival experience is part of what you are selling, this is where you notice.

It does not crawl. No technical audit, no broken links, no redirect chains, no page-speed section unless you connect something that produces one. The free companion for that is Screaming Frog's 500-URL crawler, which does not connect to Looker Studio on the free tier — the Looker Studio crawl report is a paid feature there.

It does not track rank on a schedule. Search Console's average position is a real measurement of what happened, but it is not the same as a rank tracker's daily check of a fixed keyword list, and it will not show you a position for a keyword that got no impressions. If a client's report has a rank table, this is the gap you are filling with something else.

It does not warehouse. Looker Studio queries the sources live. What the source keeps, you have; what it drops, you lose. Search Console's Performance report opens on a three-month window by default, and while the window can be widened it is not an archive of everything you ever tracked.

The paid tier, and the figure that is missing

Looker Studio Pro exists. Its per-user price is not published on Google's own Looker pricing page, which prices Looker platform editions — Standard, Enterprise and Embed — without printing a figure for any of them and directs you to contact sales for a quote. The URL that would hold a Looker Studio price returns a 404. That page does print overage rates for conversational analytics at $3.00 per million input data tokens and $20.00 per million output data tokens, but those belong to Looker rather than to Looker Studio Pro.

So the honest answer on Looker Studio Pro pricing is: not published. If you need what Pro adds — team content management and Google Cloud support, principally — the price comes from a conversation, not from a page.

A template that survives contact with a client

The structure that works is boring and that is the point. One page of headline numbers against last month. One page of queries, sorted by change rather than by volume, because a client who already ranks for their own brand does not need to see it at the top every month. One page of pages, showing which URLs gained and lost. One page of whatever the technical work was, pasted in from the crawler. One page of what you did and what you will do next, written by a human.

Build it once against one client's properties, then duplicate the report and swap the data sources. The duplication takes minutes; it is the first build that takes an afternoon.

The thing to say out loud to clients

Tell the client that the numbers come from their own Google properties and that the report is a view of their data rather than yours. This is a good conversation to have deliberately rather than by accident, because the alternative is a client discovering it the month they ask for access. It also makes the eventual move to a paid platform easier: you are changing the presentation, not the source.

Three things that go wrong in a first Looker Studio build

Charting average position as a headline number. Average position across every query a site ranks for is a nearly meaningless aggregate, and it moves when a site starts ranking badly for new terms — which looks like a decline and is often the opposite. Chart it per query or per page group, or chart clicks instead and keep position in a table.

Date ranges that do not match between charts. Looker Studio lets each chart carry its own range, which is powerful and is how a report ends up saying two different things about the same month. Set one report-level date control, and check that no chart has quietly overridden it.

Sharing with the wrong permission. A report shared with edit access is a report a client can break, usually by changing a filter and then asking why the numbers look wrong. Share with view access, and keep an unshared copy as the master.

There is a real argument for not doing it. A live link means a client can look at the search data whenever they like, which is either transparency or an invitation to react to a bad Tuesday, depending on the client. Agencies that send a dated PDF and keep the live version internal are not being evasive; they are choosing the cadence of the conversation. Agencies that share the link are betting that a client who can see everything asks better questions.

Both are defensible. What is not defensible is sharing the link and then being surprised when the client mentions a three-day dip.

When to pay for something instead

When the assembly time exceeds the subscription. That is the whole rule, and at typical agency rates it arrives somewhere between five and ten clients. The other trigger is a client who wants a branded place to log in, which Looker Studio cannot give them at any price you can see.

The platforms that can, with both billing terms and the per-client arithmetic, are on the SEO reporting software comparison. The rest of what you can do without paying is in free SEO reporting tools.

Looker Studio questions

Is Looker Studio good enough for client SEO reports?
For a small agency, yes. It connects natively to Search Console and Analytics, compares periods, styles to your branding and shares by link without the client needing an account. What it does not do is schedule delivery from your own address, provide a branded client portal, crawl a site, or store history beyond what the underlying sources keep.
How much does Looker Studio Pro cost?
Google does not publish a per-user price for Looker Studio Pro on its Looker pricing page, which asks you to contact sales for a quote instead; the URL that would carry a Looker Studio price returns a 404. The free version of Looker Studio is genuinely free and is what most agencies use.
Can Looker Studio replace a rank tracker?
Not exactly. Search Console's average position, which Looker Studio can chart, measures where your pages actually appeared for real impressions — a keyword that got no impressions has no position. A rank tracker queries the search engine on a schedule regardless. They answer different questions and they will disagree; if a client report shows rank positions, say which source produced them.
Does Looker Studio pay this site a commission?
No. Google runs no affiliate programme this site could join for Looker Studio, Search Console or Analytics. They are recommended here on merit, which for an agency under about five clients is usually the right recommendation.

The prices behind every entry sit together on the comparison of SEO reporting software, and the branding question has its own page at white-label SEO tools. Figures are readings taken on the dates shown — confirm at the vendor before you buy.
